Shymkent is a city built at the intersection of the Great Silk Road. Here you can see the evidence of different historical periods: medieval Kazakh kingdom, Russian Empire, Soviet and modern Kazakhstan.
The Soviet period architecture of Shymkent is mainly represented by industrial buildings such as Lead Factory, Machine factory, Fosforus factory, and many others. Many of them were evacuated/constructed in the 40-50ss of the 20th century. The infrastructure of the city was also formed around factories. They built hospitals, hotels, dormitories, theaters near factories to create facilities for workers.
During your city tour you will also find out that since old times bazaars have made the biggest proportion of income for the majority of the population; learn about Shymkent in World War II.
