Day 1: Almaty - Aktau mountains - Basshi
Hike at Aktau & Kattytau mountains and revel in the awesome panoramic view.
Your adventure begins with an early hotel pick-up – your guide meets you in the lobby, introduces the driver, and gives you a taste of what’s ahead. Then you’re off, in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle driven by a seasoned professional who knows these roads like the back of his hand.
The drive winds north, away from the city, and the landscape opens up almost immediately. Before long you’re greeted by the vast expanse of Kapchagai Lake – one of the last great Soviet engineering projects on Kazakh soil, still powering the entire region today. Along the highway, a row of gleaming casinos might catch you off guard: Kapchagai is one of only two places in Kazakhstan where gambling is officially permitted, a quirky reminder that this country is full of surprises.
After around 3–4 hours on the road, we arrive at our hotel inside Altyn Emel National Park for lunch and a rest before the afternoon’s adventure.
Then it’s back in the car for a scenic drive through rustic rural villages and sweeping semi-desert valleys, toward one of the most extraordinary geological sites in Central Asia: the Aktau and Katutau mountains.
Aktau is unlike anything most travellers have ever seen. Formed from the floor of the ancient Tethys Ocean, these mountains stretch 30 kilometres long and rise a kilometre high – a natural museum of the Earth’s distant past, painted in every colour of the rainbow. Pale blue lunar landscapes give way to deep red Martian hills, layer by layer, as far as the eye can see. Your guide will lead you along hidden paths to the summit, where on a clear day the vast, naked floor of the ancient Tethys Ocean stretches before you for hundreds of miles. One of those rare moments that puts everything into perspective.
After the hike, we settle in for a relaxed picnic with the full panorama of Aktau spread out in front of you. Then we move on to Katutau – a completely different character. Born from volcanic eruptions and shaped over millennia by lava, wind, and sun, these mountains are a maze of intricate, otherworldly rock formations unlike anything else in the region.
Back to the hotel for dinner and a well-earned rest.
Visiting in August? Far from any city lights, Altyn Emel offers one of the darkest skies in the region — perfect for watching the summer meteor showers.
Overnight at the village hotel, Basshi village.
Day 2. Singing Dune & Charyn Canyon
Hike the Singing Dune, enjoy the view of Ili river valley and explore Charyn Canyon.
Fuel up on a hearty village breakfast before heading out across the remote Kazakh steppe toward the day’s first wonder – the Singing Dunes. Keep your eyes open on the way: black-tailed gazelles and Asian wild asses are occasionally spotted making their way down to the Ili River for a drink. At the dunes, your guide will unravel the fascinating mystery behind them – how a massive sand formation appeared in the middle of open steppe, and why, despite the winds, it has never shifted from its place in hundreds of years. Climb to the top, take in the sweeping panoramic views of the Ili River valley, and let the scale of it all sink in.
Then the canyon. From the singing sands of the steppe to the ancient sculpted walls of Charyn – two completely different worlds in a single day. We make a gentle descent into the Valley of Castles, where towering formations of sand and clay rise around you, giving way to ancient basalt layers deeper toward the river. The Charyn River glitters below, quietly going about the work it has been doing for 12 million years. After around three hours exploring the canyon floor, we make the short scramble back to the surface and hit the road again.
Sturdy shoes with a good sole are essential for both the dunes and the canyon trails.
Next stop: Satty village, the gateway to Kolsay Lakes – about 2.5 hours from the canyon. The road is brand new and the scenery along the way is well worth the drive.
Arrival at Satty, dinner with a local family, and an overnight homestay – simple, warm, and genuinely memorable.
Overnight at a guesthouse in Satty village.
Day 3. Kolsay lakes hiking
Hike and scramble from the first Kolsay lake to the second through the spruce forest.
Wake up in the heart of the Northern Tian Shan mountains. Fuel up on breakfast at the guesthouse – you’ll want the energy for what’s ahead.
Today is all about the hike from the first Kolsay Lake to the second, and it’s a day you won’t forget. The trail winds through ancient spruce forest in a wonderful rhythm of ascents and descents, with the mountains revealing themselves at every turn. The full hike takes around 6–7 hours return (16 km, with around 500 metres of elevation between the two lakes) — a proper adventure that rewards every step.
In the afternoon, a well-earned picnic awaits on the shore of the second lake — arguably the most beautiful spot of the entire trip. Take your time here. Breathe it in.
Don’t forget to bring comfortable hiking clothes and sturdy footwear. And an important practical note: please carry your original passport (not a copy) on the hike – the Kyrgyzstan border lies around 10 km from the second lake, and border soldiers may ask to see it.
As the afternoon light softens, we make our way back down to the first Kolsay Lake, take one last look, and drive back to the village. Arrival to the village, homestay with a local family (very basic conditions), dinner.
Overnight at a guesthouse in Satty village.
Day 4. Kaindy lake, Karakol, overnight at Karakol
Drive to the Kaindy lake and see the sunken forest.
Prepare for a day of discovery at the mysterious Kaindy Lake – known as Birch Lake – perched at 2,000 metres above sea level. The lake was born from a massive landslide triggered by the devastating 1911 earthquake, which blocked the river and flooded the valley, leaving a forest of Tien Shan firs standing hauntingly in the water. The drive to the lake takes around an hour.
After lunch in Satty village, head to the Karkara border crossing into Kyrgyzstan – typically quick and hassle-free with no queues – framed by the magnificent peaks of the Kungey Alatau range. From there, a two-hour scenic drive brings you to the charming town of Karakol in the country’s eastern reaches. Here, explore the remarkable wooden Holy Trinity Orthodox Church – a testament to both architectural craftsmanship and rich historical heritage.
Dinner and overnight in Karakol.
Day 5. Karakol - Zheti Oguz cliffs - Barskoon Valley - Arabel, night at a traditional yurt camp on the shore of Issyk-Kul
Hike and scramble from the first Kolsay lake to the second through the spruce forest.
Depart Karakol early for the iconic Zheti Oguz cliffs, where striking red sandstone formations rise dramatically from lush green valleys. Continue to Maiden Braids Waterfall, where a short scenic hike brings you to the foot of the cascading falls.
From there, wind your way through the breathtaking Barskoon Valley, with its towering peaks and rushing rivers, before the landscape opens up into something truly extraordinary. Ascending by car to nearly 3,800 metres, you’ll reach the vast Arabel Plateau – an ancient, otherworldly expanse of high-mountain tundra dotted with glacial lakes, where the air is crisp, the silence is profound, and the panoramic views of the surrounding peaks seem to stretch endlessly in every direction. A place that feels utterly remote and untouched by time.
By evening, descend back to the warm shores of Issyk-Kul and settle into a traditional yurt camp for a well-deserved dinner and a night spent under a sky full of stars.
Overnight in yurt at Issyk-Kul lake.
Day 6. Issyk-Kul - Fairytale Canyon - Sonkul
Hike and scramble from the first Kolsay lake to the second through the spruce forest.
Drive along the southern shore of Issyk-Kul to the Fairy Tale Canyon – known locally as Skazka – where centuries of wind and water have sculpted sandstone into a surreal landscape of vivid colours and otherworldly shapes.
The true highlight of the day, however, lies ahead: the idyllic high-altitude Son-Kul Lake, a paradise of rolling meadows, sweeping skies and towering peaks. Upon arrival, take time to settle in before strolling along the lakeshore, breathing the pure mountain air and soaking in the vast, serene panoramas. Encounter local shepherds and their herds roaming the surrounding pastures – a glimpse into a way of life that has changed little over centuries. As evening falls, retreat to your traditional yurt for a hearty meal of local cuisine, and end the night gazing up at one of the most star-filled skies you’ll ever see.
Overnight in yurt at Sonkul lake.
Day 7. Sonkul - Bishkek
Hike and scramble from the first Kolsay lake to the second through the spruce forest.
Bid farewell to the tranquil shores of Son-Kul Lake and embark on the final drive of your journey towards Bishkek, the vibrant capital of Kyrgyzstan. The road unfolds through some of the country’s most scenic landscapes – sweeping mountain passes, deep gorges, and broad valleys gradually giving way to the bustle of city life. It’s a long but rewarding drive, so sit back, put on your favourite music, lose yourself in a book, or simply drift off to sleep as the mountains slowly recede behind you.
Upon arriving in Bishkek, enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the city’s many excellent restaurants – a fitting final meal after days of yurt stays and mountain air. If time allows, take a short stroll through the city centre: the leafy Ala-Too Square, the lively Osh Bazaar, or the tree-lined boulevards that give Bishkek its surprisingly green and relaxed character.
Here your seven-day adventure through the landscapes, cultures and histories of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan comes to a close – but the memories of ice-capped peaks, nomadic hospitality, starlit skies and ancient canyons will stay with you long after you’ve returned home.

Frequently Asked Questions
What vehicle will be used for the tour, and is it a 4×4 with rear seat-belts and child seats?
For our tours we usually use such cars as Toyota Land Cruiser or Toyota Sequoia.
We utilize only 4×4 vehicles to ensure a safe and reliable journey. Our fleet consists primarily of Toyota Land Cruisers and Toyota Sequoias.
Each vehicle is maintained to a high standard and undergoes a comprehensive safety inspection before every departure. For your safety, all cars are equipped with functional seat belts in the rear seats. Furthermore, if a child seat is required for your trip, we will provide one to ensure the comfort and safety of your younger travelers.
In Basic option - will the driver speak English?
Our drivers have a basic level of English — enough to get by, but don’t be surprised if a phone dictionary makes an appearance now and then. It’s all part of the adventure! If you’d like the full story behind every destination — the history, the geology, the culture — the Standard option with an expert guide is the way to go.
In Basic option - will the driver lead hikes?
For safety reasons we prefer our drivers to stay rested and alert for the road ahead, so they won’t be leading longer hikes. That said, shorter walks and quick explorations are absolutely fine. If guided hiking is important to you, the Standard option is the better fit.
What will I get by choosing Standard?
You will get everything from Basic — accommodation, meals, entry tickets, and water — plus your own expert English-speaking guide. Here’s what that means in practice:
- your driver stays focused on the road, while your guide is fully dedicated to you.
- They’ll bring every destination to life with stories about history, geology, and culture;
- lead every hike; and be by your side throughout the entire tour for whatever you need.
It’s the difference between seeing a place and truly understanding it.
Is it possible to arrange vegetarian meals?
Absolutely! We are happy to arrange vegetarian meals for you. Just let us know your dietary preferences when booking and we’ll take care of the rest. We can also accommodate vegan, raw, gluten-free, dairy-free, and most other dietary requirements — no one should have to worry about food on a trip like this. Just let us know and we’ll make it work!
Is it possible to do the Kolsai lake trek on horses?
You may come across locals offering horse rides at the lake — a tempting option, but not one we include in our tours. We prefer to explore on foot, and for good reason: we can’t vouch for the condition of the horses or equipment, and your safety is something we take seriously. The hike itself takes around 6–7 hours return and is very manageable for most fitness levels — our guests regularly surprise themselves with how enjoyable it is. Two legs are all you need.
That said, if horse riding is on your wish list, we’d love to make it happen properly. We can arrange a session at a reputable local riding club with all the right equipment — helmets, proper boots, and horses that are well looked after. Just let us know and we’ll sort it out.
Is this a fully private tour for our family, or could other guests be added?
This will be your fully private tour, no other guests will be added.
Is it possible to upgrade accommodation from guesthouses to yurt or hotel rooms in Satty village?
Yes, absolutely! If you’d prefer something different from a standard guesthouse, we can arrange a stay in a cosy yurt or a hotel room in Satty village for an additional fee. Just get in touch with us before booking and we’ll discuss the available options and find the best fit for you.
I see similar offers from other tour companies with cheaper prices, why your price is higher?
Great question — and we’d rather be upfront about it than defensive.
Our drivers. We work with a small, trusted group of professionals who drive well-maintained premium 4WD vehicles. They don’t speed, they know every rough stretch of road in every national park we visit, and they’ve spent years mastering routes that less experienced drivers find genuinely challenging. If our regular drivers are unavailable, we don’t run the tour — we’d rather reschedule than compromise on who’s behind the wheel.
Our guides. Every guide we work with has gone through our own training programme, speaks confident conversational English, and will take you through the history, geology, geography, flora and fauna of every place you visit. Many have been with us for years. Same rule applies: if our guides are unavailable, the tour doesn’t run.
Our support. Behind every tour is an office team available to help with anything — customising your itinerary, answering questions, and making sure every detail is taken care of before and during your trip.
Our values. We pay our team fairly, because people who take genuine pride in their work deserve to be compensated well for it. That’s how we retain the same trusted faces year after year — and why our guests keep coming back.
Our accountability. We are a fully licensed, tax-paying tour operator — a legitimate company with real accountability to our guests, our team, and the law.
Cheaper options exist, and we respect that budget matters. But when you’re travelling far from home in remote national parks and on rough mountain roads, the question worth asking is: who do I trust to get us there and back safely, and make it truly memorable? We’d love to be the answer to that question.
