About The CHARYN CANYON NATIONAL PARK
Charyn Canyon is one of the most popular day trips in the Almaty region. It is located 195 km east of Almaty, near the Chinese border. Want to feel like a Western hero? This is the place to live out that fantasy!
There are different theories about the origin of the name “Charyn”. The most popular theory is that “Char” translates from the Turkic language as “cliff”. Another version is that it is a word for ash tree from the Uighur language (there are many Uighur villages around).
The canyon has been part of Charyn National Park since 2004. It stretches along the Charyn River from south to north for 154 km and holds many stunning, hidden spots that you may not notice from the main road. After three years of exploration, we are still discovering this magical place and are sure we will find many more treasures!

Geological History of Charyn Canyon
About 400 million years ago, the ancient ocean Paleo-Tethys covered the whole territory of modern Kazakhstan and beyond. Twenty million years later, the bottom of this ocean began to rise because of the movement of tectonic plates. Three hundred million years after that, the Jungar Sea formed here. It disappeared 50 million years later and was replaced by Ili Lake, which washed down the foothills of the Ili-Alatau mountains, forming layers of sediments. These ancient sediments turned into one of the most picturesque areas you can visit — Charyn Canyon.
Here you can observe the results of denudation (from Latin “to strip bare”): the wearing down and stripping away of the land.
It’s a two-step process:
- **Break Down:** Wind, rain, sun, and ice slowly weaken and crack the rock (this is called weathering).
- **Carry Away:** The Charyn River then cuts through and carries the broken rock away (this is called erosion).
For millions of years, the Charyn River has acted like a powerful saw, while the weather has softened the rock around it. Together, they have carved down through the rocky plateau, creating the deep, beautiful canyon with its steep walls and towers that we see today.
Weather in Charyn Canyon.
In the tourist season, from April until October, the inside of the canyon can be extremely hot (about +35 or even +40 degrees Celsius), so **DO NOT** forget your sunscreen and a hat! However, on some rare summer days, it rains here, and when it rains, it literally pours! In winter, a thin snow layer covers the canyon and the temperature is around -6°C. We must also remember that we are in the steppes of Kazakhstan, which means there is always wind, and sometimes the wind is so strong that it significantly affects the perceived temperature, and can even make visiting the canyon impossible.
Flora and fauna of Charyn Canyon.
The canyon is a unique place where the Sogdian ash tree, a relict that survived the Ice Age, is still growing! It is one of the few places where this relict species grows, with the other major population being in North America. How incredible is that? You can literally touch history! Also, more than 1,500 plants and 62 animals are found here, many of which are listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan. If you get lucky, you might see steppe eagles, gazelles, foxes, and others. Moreover, the canyon holds remains of fossil fauna such as mastodon, elephants, hyenas, and more.
Last year in October, we were lucky to encounter a Siberian mountain goat right in the most visited part of the canyon (at that time of year, it is rarely visited)! That was such a special, unforgettable moment! The fully matured adult was just a dozen meters from us! He was running, but then he suddenly stopped, looked at us for a moment, even posed a bit, and then we saw the grace with which this large animal jumped on the rugged rocks. Wold you like learn more

Valley of Castles
The most visited place in Charyn Canyon is the Valley of Castles. It is named this way because the shape of the rocks resembles castles. Besides the “castles,” you can also notice formations like “a Soviet car,” a big round rock barely hanging on a tiny rock, “a human head,” and any other shape your imagination can conjure. We usually hike down to the Charyn River (about 3 km), which takes 40–50 minutes of a leisurely walk, with enough time to snap stunning photos on the way. On the road to the river, you will see a rock arch. Legend has it that touching the right part brings wealth, and the left brings love—but you can always have both!
At the end of our hike, we reach a beautiful open glade, where we will see several tables with benches under the shade. These are provided for visitors to sit, have a picnic, and hide from the hot summer sun. That is the place where we will have a chance to touch the Sogdian ash tree, which we already know survived the Ice Age. The way back usually takes around one hour because we are going uphill. Sometimes on hot summer days, it can be a bit challenging for some travelers, so in this case, we use an official National Park taxi, which costs around 800 TG (or 1.5 €).
Camping in Charyn Canyon.
Camping is one of the best ways to be in touch with nature and escape the noisy city. Charyn National Park allows you to camp in its territory. One of the best and safest spots is the open area on the shore of the Charyn River in the Valley of Castles. However, we prefer to camp in other parts of the Canyon—more private and less crowded—like Bestamak and Temirlik canyons. It’s such a joy to sit and stare into the sky full of stars! Imagine a crackling bonfire, coupled with scary stories about witches, ghosts, and red wolves! Our guides will tell some of them if you are not scared. In those parts of the canyon, you can experience absolute silence.
We provide all camping equipment, so you can relax and have a good time!
Rarely visited parts of Charyn canyon.
Charyn Canyon has an enormous territory, and not every piece looks like the Valley of Castles. There is Moon Canyon, for instance, whose relief resembles the surface of another planet. Black Canyon speaks for itself. We typically visit these places on our back-road programs. In addition, we might see some hidden spots, come closer to the river, and embrace the beauty of nature.
Final note — why Charyn matters
Charyn is not just a pretty backdrop — it’s a living piece of Kazakhstan’s natural heritage: dramatic geology, rare trees that whisper of ancient climates, and quiet galleries where light sculpts stone into castles. Come with curiosity and care. See it, photograph it, and leave it ready for the next traveler.
